Reconnecting Families Through Sport

As we begin a wonderful new year today with hope and excitement, I can't help but reflect on one of my most favourite moments of the past year.
Growing up as an athlete, my mom was at almost every competition I ever participated in. Whether it was high school cross-country, track and field, and every horse show I was ever in. I didn’t realize at the time how important that was to see her on the sidelines with her quiet smile, and warm hug no matter the outcome. But as I grew into my 20’s and beyond, our lives got busier, my competitions became less and we lost the connection.
Many FirePower members are much like me. We were athletic most of our lives through high school and university, then building careers and families of our own became the priority for our 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. Our busy schedules may have taken our time but didn’t take our love of sport. I dabbled in an amateur boxing career and eventually found CrossFit with my husband.
People come to CrossFit for a variety of reasons, but what many of them find is a rekindling of their competitive spirit like their high school or university years. A passion they didn’t realize was missing for so many years. Almost every athlete participates in some level of a CrossFit competition either as an individual or on a team, against other athletes or simply against their own self trying to better a personal record.
This past September, Jeff Ramlogan was competing in the Element team event for the first time in a long time. He has been a member for over 10 years but this event was different.
“My amazing mom came to cheer me on yesterday at my CrossFit comp. Love this lady. My sisters and brother in law also came out too.”
Jeff is 41 years old and for the first time, his mom came to watch him in a CrossFit competition. He was so proud to have her there and I can imagine her pride watching him in action again after so many years. “ I love you too son. U are an amazing child”
Our vision at FirePower is to reconnect families through sport; to help them find a new passion together, strengthen communication, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. Jeff and his mom found this moment and my heart was beaming with pride for them.
No matter how old we get, we still feel pride to be cheered on by our family. Our conversations change, our connections strengthen and we create a few laughs along the way. I hope we can help you find your moment this coming year and beyond.
